This exquisite bust of "DAVID" is a fantastic replica of the original created by Michelangelo Buonarroti and done by Gino Ruggeri, with his signature on the rear base of the bust, G. RUGGERI. Gino Ruggeri, one of the most well known sculptors in Italy, worked many years for Tito Bianchi in Bianchi's Factory in Tuscany. He developed a means of mixing alabaster with resin to make it more durable and waterproof.

This particular sculpture is indicative of Ruggeri's masterful use of positive and negative space through design and composition. The detail is phenomenal. Besides the purity and beauty, two identifying marks exist on this bust, aside from his signature that identify an original by Ruggeri. One is a slight indentation, much like a small feather above the "ER" in RUGGERI, certifying both his signature and the intentional imperfection in the "perfect DAVID," and it sits on a polished alabaster/resin black base, the bottom right half of which only was polished. Ruggeri left the bottom left half with the final scars of pre-tooling.

The David is considered a masterpiece, It was erected in 1504 in the public plaza of Florence, the Piazza della Signoria. In 1873, the original was moved to the Accademia delle Belle Arti, where it was better protected for posterity, and a copy of the work was erected in the plaza in 1882

This bust of DAVID depicts an ideal male form combining heroic strength and human uncertainty. At the time the original statue gave courage and will to the citizens in the small city state of Firenze. This bust today shows the slingshot over his shoulder and still seems to radiate the grace in power, the perfection in form combined with the human uncertainty as he stood up to Goliath.

Data: Gino Ruggeri's works included "The Stations of the Cross" in 1976. He was born in Volterra (Pisa) the country of alabaster. He worked many years for Tito Bianchi who sold out his factory in 1987 to Amilcare Santini. The Santini family now control the rights to Ruggeri's works, i.e. 1987 forward.

Ruggeri had several original Alabaster/resin sculptures that are considered masterpieces, two of which are "The Stations of the Cross and DAVID."

Replicas of "David" are legion, including famous 'parts' of David. The "Bust of David" is replicated primarily as the head and neck.
